Book Report Project

In the media age, many people rely on the TV, radio, box office, and computer for entertainment. Many people forget that one of the cheapest and most exciting forms of enjoyment is reading! And not only the newspaper and magazines, but stories and novels!! It is also a well-documented fact that reading for pleasure helps to improve writing skills and vocabulary.

LIBRARY TRIPS: Every four weeks, we will take a trip to the library. We will be there for no longer than twenty minutes. You are to use that time there to pick out a book that you would like to read and check it out. You are free to bring a book from home or from another library, but be sure to have it with you on the designated library day.

SELECTING YOUR BOOK: You are allowed to choose your own books to read as long as the books meet a certain list of conditions:

BOOK SIGN-UP: You will need to sign your book in with Miss Hyde after you have checked it out. She will record the title, the author's name and the number of pages in the book. If you change books you must change your sign-up.

READING: Bring your book to class with you EVERY DAY. You won't always have time to read, but this way you will never have the excuse of "I have nothing to do." Sometimes, you will have designated class time to read. You will have to pace yourself during the four weeks. The day after the book sign-up you must come with a reading schedule written out in your planners-this is one way to help ensure that you finish your book on time.

BOOK REPORTS: You will have four weeks to complete the book that you have signed up for. Your book report will be due on the last day of the four week cycle. The due date for the book report will be on the board one week in advance.

You have three choices as to what type of book report you would like to do. BUT you cannot repeat the same option during the semester:

  1. WRITTEN BOOK REPORT: Use the Book Report Form. If you choose to do a written book report, simply answer the questions in complete sentences and on your own piece of paper and turn it in on the due date.
  2. BOOK POSTER: If you choose to do a book poster, let us know and we can provide you with a piece of poster paper, or you may use your own drawing paper. (Paper should be at least 11X14 in size.) Book posters must include the title of the book, its author, your name, and an illustration that YOU draw. A detailed summary (at least one page in length) should be included on the back of the poster. ALL POSTERS MUST BE OF EXCEPTIONAL QUALITY TO BE ACCEPTED FOR CREDIT! In other words, no crayon and stick figure drawing cranked out the hour before. You do not need to be Michelangelo to earn a good grade, but it must appear as though a good deal of time and effort were put into it.
  3. ORAL BOOK REPORT: This requires an oral presentation of your report that is at least 5 minutes in length. You can follow the Written Book Report Form, write an outline and then present. But you could also try some other options-you could write a skit or a song and then perform it in front of the class, you could do a regular presentation and include a dramatic reading from your book. If you can think of other options that interest you that could qualify as an oral book report, please ask. No matter the type of oral report you choose, be sure to PRACTICE your delivery!
  4. Remember, you must complete one of each report before you can repeat one. That means that if you choose to do a written report for your first book, you will need to do a poster or and oral report for your second one.

Each book report is worth 50 points. This is a significant portion of your grade. Give your best effort every time-- take pride in it!!!
